Former Viarigi Castle
Address Via Castello, 14030 Viarigi AT, Italia
In 1100 there existed in Viarigi a mighty turreted castle equipped with fortified ramparts and surrounded by deep moats as depicted in the 'CODEX ASTENSIS'.
The Viarigi fiefdom underwent alternating dominations over time by the Commune and the Bishop of Asti, the Marquis of Monferrato and by the City of Alessandria.
In 1274 Viarigi was partly conquered by Alexandrian troops.
The complete destruction of the castle took place in 1316 by Matteo Visconti, Podestà of Alessandria and was later returned to the Marquis Teodoro of Monferrato in 1320.
